“Is she deaf?” “Can you talk?” “Do they pay you for doing that?” And my favorite, “15 1/2 33!” This summer I did not vacation in an exotic locale–no trips to see the world’s largest ball of twine, the two-headed calf, or any wonders of this world. This summer I was at work in San [...]
We all want to work at Indianapolis Museum of Art–I was in so many inspiring sessions last week at Museums and the Web, theirs was just one of them. The folks at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (with the catchy tagline, IMA – It’s My Art–I love that) did a session about their recent viral [...]
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Museum Computer Network, I am pleased to announce that our new three year strategic plan is now available on our MCN website, www.mcn.edu.Click the link on the homepage to get to either the full plan, or the Executive Summary. Back in November in Pasadena, we introduced [...]
The wire is near, the end is approaching, the sky is falling…well, maybe not yet–but it’s close. Friday, March 2, is the last day to submit proposals for your sessions, papers, workshops or other presentations for the Museum Computer Network annual conference. This year in November in Chicago, our theme is Building Content, Building Community: 40 [...]
Oh, those Californians have done it again. Friday my hometown paper greeted me with the news that my favorite House Representative, George Miller, was now a presence on Capitol Hill Island in Second Life. Apparently the work was finished just in time for San Francisco’s own Nancy Pelosi to be sworn in as Speaker of [...]
I attended the New Media and Social Memory Symposium last week along with Perian and several of our MCN colleagues. Rick Rinehart and his colleagues at the University of California in Berkeley put on another very impressive program; one which was full of stimulating ideas. As Perian says, much of the talk was related to [...]
Last week I witnessed an outpouring of love, admiration and appreciation for an amazing human being–color geek Bruce Fraser. Thanks to Alan Newman (National Gallery), I knew about the event that took place last Wednesday night at MacWorld, here in San Francisco. Giants of the industry were there to honor Fraser, whose untimely death from [...]
I was saddened to learn this morning of Bruce Fraser’s recent passing. I had heard at the MCN conference that he was ill but didn’t realize the nature or severity of his illness. We had the pleasure of his consultation here at SFMOMA several times over the past years, and he was quite a remarkable [...]
What’s on my mind is not so different from what lots of us are thinking about, I bet–one of the big projects we’re working on here is installing a digital asset management system, and integrating it with our collection management system, and other more human systems. Believe me, it has my brain and those of [...]
When I wrote last June about the strategic planning process it was a general mention because the plan is so wide-ranging. But Holly’s question of a few weeks ago struck a chord. What is MCN doing for new/young professionals? One hundred years ago when I was in grad school at JFK University, more attention was [...]
