Holly Witchey

Holly Witchey is an independent art historian and museum consultant residing in lovely Cleveland, Ohio. She is an adjunct faculty member at Case Western Reserve University and also teaches classes in the online Museum Studies program at Johns Hopkins University. In addition, she serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Museum Computer Network, and is an AAM appointed member to the National Committee for Archives, Libraries, and Museums (CALM). From 2002 -2007 she served as a member of and, eventually, chair of the American Association of Museum's Media & Technology Standing Professional Committee. For reasons that are still unclear to her, Witchey has a Ph.D. in 15th Century Italian Painting and Sculpture. As Associate Curator of European Art at the San Diego Museum of Art, she began developing content-rich projects for museums using new technologies. In 2000 she left the curatorial world to start the New Media Department at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The department of New Media was eliminated during the recession of 2008-2009. Witchey writes and speaks about museum ethics, accessibility, and issues that have arisen as a result of the use of new technologies in museum settings. She is the author of three books none of which have anything to do with new media and can be purchased at significantly discounted prices on Amazon.com. They make excellent door stops.

A Service Announcement

We don’t have a lot of time on this earth! We weren’t meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements.–Peter Gibbons (in Office Space)

A Super Bowl Bet Between Museums!

NYC in your travel plans for the near future?

If so, I’ve got a couple of recommendations for you.
At the Pierpont Morgan: “A Woman’s Wit: Jane Austen’s Life and Legacy.“  Great little exhibition.   As I wrote my friend Sarah this morning, I love going to the Pierpont Morgan as much for the supplementary objects on view as for the main focus of an exhibition.  [...]

Caleb Larsen’s “A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter” (2009)

This is just cool.  Found it online today when I was doing some research on deaccessioning to feed my museum studies students at CWRU.  It’s a black box that auctions itself off on e-bay every seven days.
So many questions!

Wreath-Away

Today, on the way back from a shopping excursion (my only child is headed off to a semester in NYC) we counted 75 Xmas wreaths still hanging on front doors on the approximately 2 mile jaunt home.  75 wreaths still on doors and it is January 25.
So here’s another idea free of charge to [...]

Anyone for a field trip to the Science Museum in London?

‘1001 Inventions: Discover the Muslim Heritage in Our World’ at the Science Museum in London!  Read the BBC article describing the exhibition.   Or, better yet,  visit the excellent exhibition website.

What happens in PowerPoint, stays in PowerPoint!

This ARTICLE has nothing to do with museums, it’s about healthcare fraud.  Nonetheless it serves as a cautionary tale to all of us–if you thinking a committing a crime, don’t create a PowerPoint explaining how you are going to do it.

Let’s Start Having All Our Conferences at Holiday Inns

Human bed warmers!! Now that’s a new technology I can appreciate–send ‘em to Cleveland quick.  It’s cold here.
