http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

Okay. Is it just paranoid to read this and feel that if one did this one would be leaving the Universe As We Know It and entering some kind of Googlesphere? I mean, it's only software, but it's also How We Connect via the Internet. Not being a digital native, but a Neanderthal dragging around way too many experiences, I know how fragile and metaphysical a thing that really is. If Google supplies / controls the way our browsers resolve addresses, that's ...weird.

And I still don't get the part about advertising.

I'm embarrassed to admit it to the world, but I don't get it.
Further explanation, please. You know, for Dummies.
How do I use an alternate DNS resolver? Where do I access it / install it?
How does eliminating advertising pages ...switch on advertising?
What am I missing? (Okay, don't answer that one.)
