I was doodling around the iPhone site this morning. This was for research purposes only, since the iPhone still (ahem!) isn’t available in Israel. You can get a sim-less version for about $650, or hack an American one, but no carrier in Israel has yet signed on with Apple.
Anyway, I was poking around the app store to see what everyone’s talking about, and …epiphany! I stumbled upon the ultmate cell phone app, the light dawned, and I realized what this thing is really good for. I mean, video and e-books and GPS and tip calculators are all cool, but never again having to search for a level when hanging a picture? That’s just brilliant.
Talk about hand-held museum apps…

Guilty as charged….this was one of the first apps that I installed on my iPhone and had exactly the same idea! With the the Ruler, measurement conversation and Flashlight apps I’m ready to set off for any collection storage area.
Recalling the many mishaps from our days installing exhibitions I also installed the iFirstAid. (note to curators: DO NOT put fabric pins in your mouth while standing on a ladder and yelling at your junior apprentice, this is sure to result in a very expensive set of x-rays)
Maybe Musematic needs to host a museum professionals iPhone app contest…

I also thought about a ruler (tape measure). Obviously, someone’s already done that (as usual). Does it work by using the camera?

The link to the image no longer works. It’s a level (you lay your iPhone on top of a picture frame and use it as a level).
