Further proof that there’s nothing new under the sun, all things go full circle, etc. etc.
The latest iteration of e-paper technology just announced: the Readius pocket-sized mini-Kindle with roll-out flexible screen. “The screen looks just like a liquid crystal display, but can bend so flexibly that it can wrap around a finger.” A pocket-sized scroll, in other words.
The Dead Sea Scrolls were kept in slightly less portable but equally elegant cases (sleek clay jars) — but we’ve managed to digitally roll them and display a couple of them on the web, so a pocket-sized roll-up version seems like the logical next step.
Anyway, the whole digital paper / fabric thing fascinates me. This version works by “transistors behind each pixel that can potentially provide fast switching and high performance” as well as high image quality. Just imagining a transistor behind each pixel is so …unimaginable.
