Another technology but not technology blog this holiday season I’m afraid. Currently I’m blogging while participating in my husband’s favorite holiday activity, watching “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I personally like Pheobe Buffet’s retitling of this film from a “Friends’ episode, “It’s a Sucky Life and Just When It Can’t Suck Anymore It Does.” I’m more of a “White Christmas” or “Miracle on 34th Street” person myself. Today has been one of those strange days and I’m feeling slightly at sixes and sevens and here’s the reason why.
I’m a big fan of the U.K. writer Terry Pratchett. Today my husband wanders into the breakfast table with the newspaper and an editorial about Pratchett with two pieces of information. First, that ION televison network was going to be broadcasting a live action movie of Pratchett’s “Hogfather” this evening (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765458/). The second piece of information was the announcement that Pratchett, at 59, recently announced he is suffering from early onset Alzheimers (http://ca.today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&storyID=2007-12-13T073222Z_01_L1335151_RTRIDST_0_ENTERTAINMENT-BRITAIN-PRATCHETT-COL.XML&archived=False) .
So I’m watching “It’s A Sucky Life” because even though ION is running “Hogfather” they are doing it over a four-hour period with endless commercials. I live in a non-TIVO household. Technology can’t save me tonight, I guess I’ll go read the book again.
Mr. Pratchett, I do believe, like George Bailey, that ultimately it’s a wonderful life. And that is why I tore up the letter I originally wrote to the Hogfather this evening. Instead of asking for that ring from Tiffanys and some parsnips I’m hoping (like the rest of your fans) that the Hogfather will bring you a health and happiness in the New Year.
Oook.
