They made me join Facebook.

“They?” “Yes, They” “Which ‘They’?” “You know… Theeeey”

In this case, “They” refers to my friends, my social groups, and my job. See, today is my first day as Collection Information and New Media Coordinator at the Magnes and it started off with a big meeting about the new Magnes presence on Facebook (shameless plug: go here to join the group!). I had nothing to do with starting it up, but I’m excited about the initiative of some of the other departments to use the tools available to facilitate their work (in this case, the Marketing department). Now it’s a discussion of how to work collaboratively between the departments who use these tools differently. How can we meld them into one “voice” or can we? should we? I love these kinds of issues, and I’m pleased to be able to be a part of this new era for my institution. (For those who are curious, I’m going to be responsible for wrangling collection content and making it accessible through digital means – including utilizing Web 2.0/3.0 tools. I already have about 4 huge projects looming, but it will be exciting and educational, if scary. If you see me at a conference, I will certainly need a drink. Maybe five…)

So anyway, after trying to set up my Facebook profile and find some of the more relevant museum groups, I came home and started playing with Facebook again. I’ve uploaded pictures of my costumes, found friends I’ve been looking for for 15 years, and had sheep tossed at me by Richard. That last is totally appropriate since Facebook and MySpace were the two sites I swore I would never get accounts on. I am such a sheep. Baaaaaaa

If I ever do get a MySpace account, you may be sure that mutant demons have stolen my soul and I’ve gone over to the dark side. Say a requiem for me. In the meantime, I hope to see some of you online!
