Pirates and PR

Posted by on Thursday November 29 2007

Good article by Ken Hunt in the Toronto Globe and Mail. “Illegal downloaders of music and movies are at the forefront of technology — and it’s time the industries caught up.” Hunt relates the story of Daniel Defoe’s infringers, apparently the first to be called “pirates,” a far more meaningful job description in 1701 than it is today.

“Even though the pirates hadn’t made Defoe rich, they had done him a huge favour: They made his words available to the general public much more cheaply than the publishing monopolies of the day would allow. This wide readership helped establish his literary reputation, making him one of the most famous men in England and assuring that his future works would find an audience.”

Y’know… I misread the heading twice as “Pirates and PBR” I really shouldn’t try to catch up on my blogs when I’m tired.

You did catch the recent Wired article about Universal Music CEO Doug Morris admitting the lack of tech-savvy executives within the music business, right? Talk about not getting it…
