3D – without the glasses

Posted by on Friday November 17 2006

I went to visit a local creative services company a few days ago. I thought the days of cool company offices disappeared in the 90s when the bubble bust, but I’m pleased to report it is alive and well and living in Los Angeles.

Primarily I went to see an Autostereoscopic display – say what? Essentially, a 3D display that doesn’t require you to wear glasses. Yup… it was cool. Imagine a regular 42″ plasma display (Philips) with a lenticular screen giving 9 sweet spots over a viewing angle of about 120 degrees showing mesmorizing 3D CG stuff. I had to sit down… in nine different chairs.

The other cool thing was just the offices. Toys, more toys, games, pool tables, sofas (for having ‘creative thoughts’), a swing and shiny gadgets everywhere. I may go back for a play date. They have a minimalist website which earns points just for dubbing Aretha Franklin’s Rock Steady over one of their showreels. No info on the display though.

See 3d cgi for a rundown of 3D displays.
