Musematic
Brooklyn Museum 2.0

Posted by Richard Urban on Thursday July 13 2006

While I was at the RBMS conference I met someone from the Brooklyn Museum who noted that they had recently added a MySpace profile for the museum – as of today they had gained 269 “friends” for the museum. I thought this might be a useful tidbit of information on the day that MySpace became the most visited site for U.S. Internet traffic.

And the museum is delivering content to their new found friends.  Soon the Museum’s profile will include podcasts related to their “Graffiti” exhibition that feature local artists discussing the history graffiti in Brooklyn. Graffiti is also connecting to audiences by allowing people to contribute photos of Brooklyn graffiti to a Flickr photo set that will become part of the museum’s collections.  A similar project, Picture Australia, now boasts a Flickr set of over 5,000 images.

What are you doing at your museum to connect with audiences through social networking tools?

I have a question concerning the nouns.

What is the general attitude of museum’s having “garage sales?”

We started out having a book sale, and now it includes everything but the kitchen sink. Not very educational by any means.

The problem as I see it, is that we are selling objects that resemble our permanent collection. We strive for an understanding of cultural art, but when we sale objects of questionable artistsry we fall short in delivering our message.

    What does Musematic think?
